It Pays To Pretend With NASA!
Ever thought about what it would be like to live on Mars? What about getting paid to?? Well, It pays to pretend with NASA!
Four lucky applicants will get paid to pretend to live on Mars for a year. It is a 1,700 square foot martian-like habitat. The habitat is located at Johnson space center in Houston and was created with a 3D printer.
The 4 applicants will work a simulated martian-like exploration mission complete with limited communication back home, limited resources, restricted food, equipment failures and even spacewalks. NASA plans to have 3 of these experiments having the first one start next year in the fall. Grace Douglas, lead scientist said "We want to understand how humans preform in them." Also "We are looking at Mars realistic situations." Friday, August 6th they started taking applications but the requirements are strict. They will not be seeking just anyone. Some of the requirements are as follows: Having a master's degree in science, engineering, or facilitating proof of pilot experience, or having an exceptional aptitude in the math field. You also have to be an American citizen or permanent U.S. resident.
There was a similar project called Mars 500 by the Russians that didn't end well. It was mainly due to the fact the people were much like regular people with no prior experience. This shows that NASA is looking for participants who would fit the job of an actual astronaut.
So, if you fit most of these requirements then you should maybe take the time and apply! Who knows maybe you could actually end up going to Mars on a real space mission!
